Hello coders,
using the AAPC code converter tool, inputting ICD-9-cm code 788.1 (dysuria) (painful urination) (strangury) the output of ICD-10-CM codes R30.0 Dysuria & R30.9 Painful micturition unspecified.
I checked a medical dictionary and verified all alphabetic Index terms and wonder what the difference in the two codes are? I would be grateful for any clarification, as I am not understanding when the code R30.9 would be used.

Because ICD-10-CM does assign different codes, it is my understanding that R30.9 is to be reported when the diagnosis is painful micturition or painful urination without further specification. If the physician documents dysuria or strangury, then code R30.0 may be reported. This is strictly based on use of the Alphabetic Index to assign a code to the documented term. My medical dictionaries also translate dysuria as difficulty or pain in urination, so I agree it is confusing. Cindy
