Book Based Independent Study Program (ISP)
The Independent Study Program (ISP) is an individual, book based home study course designed to teach the fundamentals of medical coding and help prepare students for the CPC® or CPC-H® certification examination.

Note: Because only the current calendar year certification examinations are offered, an ISP student that goes on to take the certification examination may take a different year exam than the year of ISP completed. It is strongly recommended that coding manuals correspond to the current calendar year of both ISP enrollment and certification examinations.
How does the ISP work?
The ISP is completed at the student’s own pace within a one-year period. After the student reads each module (book), an end-of-module test is submitted to AAPC for grading. Once all module tests are successfully completed, a certificate of completion will be issued.
Is the ISP right for me?
In order to be successful in the ISP, each applicant should have a general understanding of anatomy and medical terminology, as well as the dedication, discipline, and ability to learn on their own.
Will I have access to help with the ISP if I need it?
While this is a self-study course, each actively enrolled student of the ISP will have access to a personal coach for technical assistance as needed.
