HIPAA--Responding to a Breach

As a result of changes to HIPAA under the HITECH Act, there are specific reporting obligations following a breach of PHI. Minimizing potential penalties often depends on whether you have enacted appropriate practice-specific policies and procedures that provide appropriate administrative, physical and technical safeguards to protect PHI. Beyond these concerns, we will review appropriate actions in response to a breach to ensure compliance. We will also review risks associated with attempted implementation of inadequate or incomplete (commonly off-the-shelf) plans. The program will conclude with a review of the OCR Investigative Process following a breach including data requirements, penalty options, and example situations illustrating how you can avoid substantial penalties.

Understanding CMS’s National Correct Coding Initiative edits is key for both medical coders and billers in recognizing proper reimbursement and coding of services. Value-Based Payment...Time to Modify Your Care?

The Value Based Payment Modifier, PVBM or VM, was introduced at the AMA CPT 2014 Symposium. The Affordable Care Act mandated that by 2015, CMS begin applying a value based modifier under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule of MPFS. This new modifier seeks to financially reward physicians who provide health care that is of high value, both in quality and low in cost. Physicians who choose not to be involved or who perform worse than average will be paid less. This session will describe and define the Value Modifier. Issues related to the application of this modifier to provider payment will be discussed by a physician and coding instructor.
