Default Billing for 88321's

If you have two slides to be read in consultation (88321), what date do you use (date of collection or date the dermatopathologist read the slides)?

Here’s why: we always use the collection date (date of surgery) when billing path and we have one insurance that won’t allow us to bill two 88321’s for the same date of service EVEN when they’re totally separate sites. So we are contemplating using the date read by our dermatopathologist

Thank you

Do you subscribe to the Pathology/Lab Coding Alert? 2009; Volume 10, Number 9 has an artical that would explain this to you according to CMS. It's too long to put here.
