Default Locum?

A physician left our practice and went elsewhere. We brought in a locum to replace the physician until a permenant replace can be found. This is for Medicare. We can't bill this as a locum correct since the provider left the practice, correct? What then is the process? Do we have to obtain a Medicare number for this provider in order to bill? Thanks.

Dawson,

You cannot bill him/her as a locum under the physician who left your practice. For Medicare, the best thing to do is to shift them to other physicians in the group. Check with your Workers Comp and Medicaid carriers. Quite frequently, they have a very quick application process. You can then shift all the Workers Comp and Medicaid patients to your locum.

Good luck,
