Overview:

Find out to communicate to your physicians about some of the difficult coding and clinical world collisions. We will discuss some of the more difficult coding areas such as documenting history of cancer versus active cancer, Health Maintenance Exams, etiology and manifestation coding and more. These areas are difficult for physicians to understand and Dr. Taylor, a Family Medicine and a certified coder (CPC) will show strategies to effectively engage your physicians in these difficult conversations.

You Will Learn:

  • The clinical and coding definitions for cancer/history of cancer, preventive exam element that really are medically necessary and etiology/manifestation codes
  • Strategies to make these coding conundrums make sense for the clinician so that the patients condition, their documentation and coding all align
  • Strategies on how to engage the physicians during these confusing and sometimes contentious conversations
  • How ICD-10 will impact these issues in the future

About The Presenter

Dr. James M Taylor is a Board Certified Family Medicine physician and Certified Professional Coder. He went into private practice in Xenia, Ohio and later joined Kaiser Permanente in Denver, Colorado, in 1995. He has served on the Electronic Health Record team for three years as a physician trainer and system administrator. He served as the Physician Director of Coding from 2002 to 2007 and is now the Medical Director of Revenue Cycle. He was recently elected to the Board of Directors for Kaiser’s physician group, the Colorado Permanente Medical Group.
