National Government Services (NGS), the jurisdiction B Medicare administrative contractor (JB-MAC), reminds providers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) to submit monthly claims for repetitive services and items in sequence. Failure to do so may mess up reimbursement.
This is especially noteworthy if the patient is receiving capped rental equipment such as oxygen or nutrition pumps. Continuous items, unless medical policy allows billing at a different frequency for items like diabetic test strips, must be reported monthly to avoid disruption of reimbursement. If the services are interrupted, they must be reported sequentially when resumed.
Accessories normally purchased, like batteries, along with the rental of a base item may be submitted on one claim. Submit the base item on the first claim line, and accessories on subsequent lines. Incorrect claim processing may result when accessories are entered on the top line.
