New Policy Concerning Oxygen Equipment
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) instructed its contractors, April 8, to implement new reasonable useful lifetime (RUL) policy for stationary and portable oxygen equipment beginning May 8.
The policy change applies to uncommon instances where the Medicare patient has both portable and stationary oxygen equipment and the RUL for one piece expires before the other. In such instances, contractors are instructed to shorten or extend the RUL of the portable oxygen equipment (identified by HCPCS Level II codes E0431, E4034, E1392, K0738, and E0433) to that of the stationary oxygen equipment (identified by HCPCS Level II codes E0424, E0439, E1390, E1391, E1405, and E1406).
This policy applies to all portable and stationary oxygen equipment, provided in or out of the Competitive Bidding Program.
