Learn the ABCs of Providing an AWV
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has posted two new educational tools that are intended to help health care professionals and staff accurately provide and report annual wellness visits (AWVs).
For dates of service on or after Jan. 1, 2011, the Affordable Care Act allows for coverage of the AWV, providing personalized prevention plan services (PPPS). The AWV is a separate service from the initial preventive physical examination (IPPE), and is not covered during the first 12 months of a beneficiary’s initial enrollment into Medicare Part B.
“The ABCs of Providing an Annual Wellness Visit” explains the elements included in the first and subsequent AWVs. Frequently asked questions (FAQs) and links to additional resources also are included in this informative document.
The second educational tool is a quick reference chart that provides information on all Medicare preventive services, including the AWV. Use this document as a quick reference to HCPCS Level II and CPT® procedure codes, ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes, coverage requirements, and beneficiary liability when reporting a preventive service.
