New Specialty Code 95 Won’t See Light

Just days before specialty code 95 Advanced diagnostic imaging accreditation was to go into effect, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) decided to eliminate it. CMS notified contractors of this change June 24 in Transmittal 2248. The new code was supposed to go into effect July 1.

Transmittal 2248 rescinds and replaces Transmittal 2192, issued April 12, 2011. Please note that, effective April 1, 2011, the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS) will no longer recognize specialty code 95; and that its removal applies to only the Multi-Carrier System (MCS).

No reference was made as to whether a new specialty code would be reassigned for providers and suppliers who supply the technical component of advanced diagnostic imaging services. These providers must be accredited by Jan. 1, 2012 to be reimbursed by Medicare.
