AAPC Physician Services’ Vice President of Business Development Dixon Davis, MBA, MHSA, recently presented a podcast for Practice Options, in which he explained relative value units (RVUs) and highlighted several considerations for their use.
“An RVU is a value that’s assigned by CMS to each CPT code, and represents the cost for providing a service,” he says. “An RVU is made up of three components: there’s a physician work RVU, there’s a practice expense component, and then there’s a malpractice component of that RVU.”
