HCPro: Learn the foreign language of ICD-10-PCS
In its most simplistic sense, coding is a form of translation. Coders translate physician documentation into data that is easily read and stored in business systems. AAPC’s Cynthia Stewart, CPC, CPC-H, CPMA, CPC-I, recently authored an article for HCPro, in which she expounded on ICD-10-PCS and how to prepare for its implementation. She explains how understanding ICD-9-CM coding terminology is crucial for accurate “translation,” but the terminology has changed in ICD-10-PCS.
“In ICD-10-PCS, root operations precisely identify the purpose, intent, or objective of a procedure,” she says. “Coders must familiarize themselves with root operations to ensure a rapid translation of the medical record using the new code set.”
