Advance: Make the Most of Mid-level Providers
In specific circumstances, a physician and a mid-level provider (MLP), such as a nurse practitioner, physician assistant or certified nurse specialist, may each provide part of an evaluation and management (E/M) service for Medicare patients. AAPC’s Suzan Hauptman, MPM, CPC, CEMC, CEDC, recently wrote an article for Advance for Health Information Professionals, in which she reviewed best practices for using mid-level providers to share or split visits with providers.
“Sharing the visit like this increases provider productivity,” she says, “… and it can still be reported under the physician’s provider number, which allows 100 percent of the physician fee schedule payment for the service rendered.”
