ICD-10 Monitor: Talk Ten Tuesday

This week’s Talk Ten Tuesday podcast focuses on helping those who have fallen behind in preparations for ICD-10 implementation. AAPC’s Evan Gwilliam, DC, CPC, CPMA, CPC-I, CCPC, notes that “… small-time operators, these small clinics like chiropractic physicians, don’t really have the resources, or knowledge, or even the concern about what’s coming with ICD-10, and so they don’t bother getting the training.”

“There are some sample questions that can be asked of these vendors that you work with, in terms of software,” he says. “Can their system handle the alphanumeric structure of ICD-10? Does the code format include a decimal? And what’s the specification on the character length, since we know that ICD-10 will be longer? There’s also the transition period, where we need to know if the systems can handle both ICD-9 and 10 codes together.”
