California Medical Association: Coding and billing maternity care

Normal and uncomplicated maternity care billing can be fairly straightforward. However, there is a common maternity coding and billing scenario that frequently leaves industry professionals scratching their heads. How do you handle billing when the patient has switched insurance during the pregnancy, but retained the same physician the entire time? AAPC’s Managing Editor G. John Verhovshek, MA, CPC, provides answers to this question in a recent article published by the California Medical Association.

“In such a case, proper billing will depend on the payor,” he says. “As a general rule, each insurer will pay only for that exact portion of care for which it is responsible.”
