HCPro: Complications with pregnancy coding

Despite ICD-9-CM codes being frozen and very few changes to the specialty for CPT® in 2014, diagnosis coding for OB/GYN services still causes some confusion. AAPC’s Education Manager, Glade B. Curtis, MD, MPH, FACOG, CPC, CPPM, CPC-I, COBGC, was recently interviewed for a HCPro article on this subject. According to Dr. Curtis, there are two main areas of pregnancy and OB care in which diagnostic coding is particularly difficult.

  • Unrelated to the pregnancy
  • 5th-digit complications
