The concept of medical coding may be simple enough in description, but the experience is far from easy. For the Record magazine recently interviewed some AAPC coding experts, Heather Golfos, CPC, CANPC, and Angelica Stephens, CPC, CPC-H, COSC, for an article offering insight on bad habits coders may fall into if they try to take shortcuts to manage a complex job.
Some of the bad habits noted in the article:
- Skimming the documentation
- Exclusively relying on software, memory, or internal “cheat sheets” for code selection
- Not staying up-to-date with educational offerings in the industry
