With the implementation of ICD-10 quickly approaching, the days of memorizing codes may be drawing to a close. The use of unspecified codes could be restricted by payers and the importance of proper look-up cannot be over emphasized. One recent Physicians Practice article, written by one of AAPC’s ICD-10 trainers, Brenda Edwards, CPC, CPMA, CPC-I, CEMC, expounded on three critical steps to accurately choosing ICD-10 codes:
- Find the condition in the alphabetic index
- Verify the code and identify the highest specificity
- Review the chapter-specific coding guidelines
