Question: Is it appropriate to report intraoperative monitoring codes 95940-95941 for monitoring during pedicle screw placement?
Answer: No. According to the May 2013 CPT® Assistant, “Use electromyography codes 95860-95864, 95869, 95870, 95885, or 95886 when performing monitoring during pedicle screw placement.”
Pedicle screws are placed for spinal stabilization. Misplaced pedicle screws may result in neurological impairment. EMG monitoring is used to assess nerve root function and proper pedicle screw placement.
