It’s Time to Upgrade Your Codes, Dude

It’s a different world since ICD-9-CM was implemented in the United States. The year was 1979, and the code set was perfect for its time. Healthcare has since changed immensely—unfortunately, medical billing codes have not. ICD-9-CM includes outdated terms that are inconsistent with current medical practices, and healthcare facilities now use cutting edge technology that didn’t exist in 1979. The upcoming transition to ICD-10 will solve these issues. Let’s just say that it’s time to “upgrade your codes, dude.”
