CPT® 2010 Revamps Urodynamics Section

Urology coders have to contend with a few changes the American Medical Association (AMA) has made to urodynamics coding for 2010.
In the Urodynamics section of CPT® 2010, the AMA has added three new codes and removed two. The three new codes are as follows:
CPT® Code | Description |
51727 | Complex cystometrogram (ie, calibrated electronic equipment); with urethral pressure profile studies (ie, urethral closure pressure profile), any technique |
51728 | Complex cystometrogram (ie, calibrated electronic equipment); with voiding pressure studies (ie, bladder voiding pressure), any technique |
51729 | Complex cystometrogram (ie, calibrated electronic equipment); with voiding pressure studies (ie, bladder voiding pressure) and urethral pressure profile studies (ie, urethral closure pressure profile), any technique |
The two Urodynamics codes you won’t find in CPT® 2010 are:
- 51772 Urethral pressure profile studies (UPP) (urethral closure pressure profile), any technique; and
- 51795 Voiding pressure studies (VP); bladder voiding pressure, any technique.
The reason for these code changes, Michael A. Ferragamo, MD, FACS, clinical assistant professor of urology at the State University of New York in Stony Brook, recently told Urology Coding Alert was “To reduce costs and payments …”
Note that add-on code 51797 Voiding pressure studies (VP); intra-abdominal voiding pressure (AP) (rectal, gastric, intraperitoneal) (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure) includes a parenthetical note stating to use 51797 in conjunction with 51728 and 51729 — rather than deleted code 51795.
According to Urology Coding Alert, experts are saying the end result will be Medicare reducing the practice expense portion of the reimbursement for these codes (Coding News).
