Vertebroplasty Quick Coding Guide

Vertebroplasty Quick Coding Guide

Percutaneous vertebroplasty involves injecting “bone cement” into the vertebral body to provide support for the structure. Coding is determined based on the segment of the spine and the type of guidance.

Report 22510 Percutaneous vertebroplasty (bone biopsy included when performed), 1 vertebral body, unilateral or bilateral injection, inclusive of all imaging guidance; cervicothoracic for the first cervicothoracic vertebral body treated. Report 22511 Percutaneous vertebroplasty (bone biopsy included when performed), 1 vertebral body, unilateral or bilateral injection, inclusive of all imaging guidance; lumbosacral for the first lumbosacral vertebral body treated. Report add-on 22512 Percutaneous vertebroplasty (bone biopsy included when performed), 1 vertebral body, unilateral or bilateral injection, inclusive of all imaging guidance; each additional cervicothoracic or lumbosacral vertebral body (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure) for each additional vertebral body.

No Need for Bilateral Modifier

The code descriptors specifiy “unilateral and bilateral;” therefore, modifier 50 Bilateral procedure is not appropriate. The codes include imaging guidance and bone biopsies performed at the same level(s).
