In the winter of 2003, the Sawgrass Florida Area Professional Coders saw a prime opportunity to form a new chapter utilizing a perfect venue of the Cleveland Clinic Florida state-of-the-art facility for chapter meetings and to proctor AAPC exams. CCF is located in Weston where the Florida Everglades are the backyard of Sawgrass marsh and its inhabitants – alligators – hence the original chapter name and mascot. In 2004 the chapter officially opened. In 2008, AAPC renamed all local chapters based on the city location so the chapter was then renamed Weston Florida local chapter.
For 14 years Weston has been able to offer this excellent venue of CCF with a bonus of utilizing physician staff who graciously volunteer their services to educate their coders with the latest advances in medicine.
In 2012, current AAPCCA Board of Directors representative Randee Herner, CPC, CPC-I, CEMC, took over as the chapter’s president when the current president resigned. Having help the vice president and treasurer positions had given Randee skills to work with several years of local chapter boards, affording Weston to grow from 482 members in 2012 to a current 3207 body of members. This growth speaks volumes for leadership and member participation within this chapter.
For example, Weston holds a minimum of 10 meetings per year with an average of 90 members present and a minimum of 8 exams are proctored each year. The chapter also hold a yearly coding conference that is affordable to members and offers up to 7 CEUs.  A May Mania picnic is held boasting 4 CEUs of education time and additional networking time while member’s children romp in the bounce-house or enjoy the onsite-made snowcones. The chapter also successfully orchestrated two ICD-10 Boot Camps in preparation for ICD-10.
Sincere AAPC passion and drive keep this local chapter on the AAPCCA move!  Challenged? Just follow their lead.
