Doctors practicing genetics and genomics now have their own specialty code, D3, thanks to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Physicians identify their Medicare physician specialty on the Medicare enrollment application or the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS). CMS uses the information for programmatic and claims processing.
How this Code Helps
Medical Administrative Contractors (MACs) will recognize this code when claims are reported. Payment depends on local and national coverage decisions.
There is also a change to the Medicare Financial Management Manual, Chapter 6, and the Medicare Claims Processing Manual, Chapter 26.
