During a Special Open Door Forum to discuss provider enrollment issues on Feb. 17, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced they are delaying (Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System) PECOS Phase II enforcement from April 2010 until Jan. 3, 2011.

Phase II of Change Request (CR) 6417 and MLN Matters 6421 Revised deals with referring physician mismatches between the National Provider Identifier (NPI) database and the PECOS system. CR 6417 and MM 6421 order the denial of any services referred by a physician who has a conflict between information found on the NPI registry National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) and the PECOS system.
Although this allows Medicare carriers and providers more time before implementation, don’t let this stop you from completing the PECOS process now. This program deadline is set and CMS is preparing to send letters out to providers who have not re-enrolled and/or modified their profiles since 2003.
