Prescribing Guidelines for Opioids
No doubt you have heard of or been personally touched by the opioid crisis currently underway in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) publishes a wide variety of information on opioids, from the basics to prescribing guidance for providers. Opioids are a class of drug known as narcotic analgesics or painkillers that may be prescribed as methadone, oxycodone or hydrocodone. Other drugs in the opioid class are fentanyl (a legal synthetic opioid) and heroin (an illegal drug).
Did you know the CDC provides web-based training to review their opioid prescribing guidelines for providers? The program is designed for primary care providers and CME credit can be earned. The training can be accessed here: https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/training/overview/index.html
