Proposed I-9 Changes: Business as Usual for 2010
Despite the planned implementation of ICD-10 in 2013, it’s business as usual for ICD-9-CM as more than 140 new and 40 changed diagnostic codes are proposed for the 2010 fiscal year release of the diagnostic system. The draft codes are included in the proposed rule for the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS), and comment is being solicited. Final codes go into effect Oct. 1, 2009.
The proposed diagnostic codes include codes for Merckel and neuroendocrine tumors, peripheral vascular embolisms and thrombus, puerperal sepsis, encephalopathy, acute and chronic gout, speech difficulties, fractures of the arm, poisoning resulting from psychoactive medications, and various causes of vomiting in children and newborns.
A number of V codes are also proposed. They include personal histories of various types of cancer or brain injury, along with a number of counseling, substance abuse, and testing scenarios.
