National Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) version 16.1, released early last week, includes 2,054 new active pairs and 1,947 modifier changes, according to Frank D. Cohen, MPA, MBB, senior analyst with MIT Solutions, Inc.
Although CCI version 16.1 attempts to untangle several troublesome sets of edits in its next round with the announcement that 142 code pair bundles will be deleted, Cohen says, this version, effective April 1 – June 30, “is already looking to make some coding pairs impossible,” writes Suzanne Leder, M.Phil, CPC, COBGC, for Part B Insider.
Here’s a glimpse of what to expect:
Deletions: CPT® codes 93610 Intra-atrial pacing and 93612 Intraventricular pacing are no longer bundled into 93651 Intracardiac catheter ablation of arrhythmogenic focus; for treatment of supraventricular tachycardia by ablation of fast or slow atrioventricular pathways, accessory atrioventricular connections or other atrial foci, singly or in combination, retroactive Jan. 1.
Swaps: Instead of bundling 29806 Athroscopy, shoulder, surgical; capsulorrhaphy into 29825 Athroscopy, shoulder, surgical; with lysis and resection of adhesions, with or without manipulation, you should bundle 29825 into 29806.
Modifier changes: CCI version 16.1 allows you to append a modifier to separate the edits bundling 64450 Injection, anesthetic agent; other peripheral nerve or branch into hundreds of other codes by changing the code’s indicator from 0 to 1, Leder says. CCI also changes the modifier indicator bundling new code 88738 Hemoglobin (Hgb), quantitative, transcutaneous into complete CBC codes 85025-85027 to 1, meaning you can append a modifier to the code.
