Deborah Grider CPC, CPC-H, CPC-I, CPC-P, CPMA, CEMC, COBGC, CPCD, CCS-P and vice president of strategic development for the AAPC, answers question to whether a coder shortage might occur. She states that it is important to mentor new coders and expects that older coders will learn ICD-10 and help the new coders transition, because these coders are very used to rapid change in the industry.

Veteran coders are so important to this industry right now but instead I see people in their 50’s getting laid-off when the transition would be much easier for them. I also see work going out-of-the country because it is “cheaper” putting the American coders out of jobs. We not only have to deal with ICD-10 issues but the language barrier of other countries too.
