I Am AAPC: Mary Tuohy, CPC

I became a member of AAPC in December 2004 when I received my Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) certification. I started my career in the medical field when I took a position in the medical records department at a hospital in Atlanta. From there, I continued to build on my career and received my Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in health and medical administrative services.

An Exciting Start

The day I received my letter that I passed the CPC® exam was the most exciting day for me. All the studying had paid off. I was now a nationally certified coder and could share my knowledge with others. I went on to do medical transactions for a chiropractor, worked the front desk, and coded for pediatrics, neonatology, and internal/family medicine. I was the first certified coder hired at the family practice I worked for, and I loved sharing my knowledge with the billing staff and providers. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work for different specialties over the years, and my AAPC credential has played a major part in helping my office grow in knowledge.

Education Pays Off

Being an AAPC member helps me stay abreast of all the changes in coding. I love the AAPC webinars, Facebook page, and local chapter meetings. I am always learning something new, and that makes me feel confident that I am an asset to the company I work for. I attended the national conference a few times as well, and I loved it. The knowledge and networking you take away are amazing.

Never Stop Growing and Learning

I currently work for Change Healthcare, switching from the coding side to the insurance side doing radiology billing. It has been a fascinating journey, especially sharing all that I have learned over the years with the people I have worked with, and in some cases, formed lifetime friendships with. I take a fierce sense of pride in what I do. I know that there is always something new to learn and will continue to absorb as much as possible and network with others. I am proud to be a certified coder and look forward to the next steps in my career. One of my favorite quotes hanging in my office says, “If everyone is moving forward together, then the success takes care of itself.”
