I Am AAPC: Gloria Nwanna, CPC

Gloria Nwanna, CPC, began her career working in the finance and accounting department of Shell Oil Company after earning an undergraduate accounting degree. This background eventually led her to become interested in the financial side of healthcare administration. Nwanna now has more than 17 years of experience in patient financial services, having held positions in patient registration, billing, and charge reconciliation. “Whichever position I have held has one thing in common, which is diagnosis coding and CPT® coding,” said Nwanna. “This led to my joining the AAPC family after passing through the rigorous academic process of becoming a Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) in 2017.”

The Joys of Membership

“Becoming an AAPC member has exposed me to the diversified career paths open to me and everyone in the healthcare industry,” said Nwanna. She went on to say that she has gained and maintained more knowledge of healthcare operations and management and can see that her career is not tied down to any one particular type of role. Nwanna finds the unending opportunities in healthcare reimbursement, documentation specialist positions, health analytics and informatics, medical auditing, and information management exciting and challenging.

Eyes on the Future

“I am looking forward to going above and beyond in my healthcare career pathway,” said Nwanna. “What I love the most about my career is the unlimited possibilities of becoming whatever I choose to be.”

Nwanna is presently completing her degree in Health Informatics and Information Management and will soon be taking the Registered Health Information Technician and clinical documentation improvement credentialing exams. “My eyes are set on my next career level in clinical documentation improvement, chief compliance officer, or revenue cycle management,” said Nwanna. “Watch the sky become my starting point!”
