The Office of Inspector General (OIG) announced Nov. 5 that it has developed a new resource designed to help medical students and new physicians understand the various health care fraud and abuse laws.
Roadmap for New Physicians: Avoiding Medicare and Medicaid Fraud and Abuse summarizes the following five main federal fraud and abuse laws:

  • The False Claims Act
  • Anti-Kickback Statute
  • Stark Law
  • Exclusion Statute
  • Civil Monetary Penalties Law

The publication also provides tips on how physicians should comply with these laws in their relationships with health care payers (such as Medicare), relationships with drug and medical supply vendors, and relationships with fellow physicians and other health providers.
The Roadmap is available on the OIG website. You may also download the information as a PDF for printing and distributing free of charge.
