SCODI Code Retired, Three Codes Eye Its Spot

As you scan through your new CPT® 2011 codebook, you may notice that 92135 isn’t in its old, familiar spot. In fact, the scanning computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging (SCODI) code has been removed from the 2011 lineup entirely. In its place you will find three new codes to report for imaging services that allow for greater specificity.

For 2011, your SCODI service code selection should be based on location.

For the front of the eye, report 92132 Scanning computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging, anterior segment, with interpretation and report, unilateral or bilateral.

For the optic nerve, report 92133 Scanning computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging, posterior segment, with interpretation and report, unilateral or bilateral; optic nerve.

For the retina, report 92134 Scanning computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging, posterior segment, with interpretation and report, unilateral or bilateral; retina.

I’m glad the correction was made, the separate descriptions does give more of a defined location although the codes 92133 and 92134 may be confusing to apply because it could be either one.

  2. Maria Dela Cruz says:

New Codes: 92133 and 92134 says unilateral or bilateral – exactly means what???? I think it means that provider can only bill once either both eyes was scanned..

and also is this code mutually exclusive with 92250, like the the soon to be deleted code 92135?

What is the medicare reimbursement of the two new codes? if it pays lower than billing code 92250, therefore, can bill 92250 instead and get higher reimbursement?

  3. Jennifer Godreau says:

unilateral or bilateral does mean that the provider bills the code once, regardless of whether the scan is done on one or both eyes.
Code 92134 is a column 2 code for 92133 – no modifier allowed.
Code 92250 is a column 2 code for 92134 and 92133 — modifier allowed on both.
92133 and 92134 both have 1.31 RVUs compared to 2.16 RVUs for 92550.
