PharMEDium Services, LLC announced Dec. 17 the availability of propofol in a pre-labeled, single patient, ready to use, tamper evident syringe admixture system. The Lake Forest, Ill. company is marketing the product as more sterile and less wasteful than other propofol alternatives currently available.
Propofol is used to induce anesthesia prior to the administration of an inhaled general anesthesia for total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). It also is used in procedures outside the operating room (OR) for sedation and anesthesia.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added propofol to its Current Drug Shortages list in the fall of 2009, where it remains today. Other providers of propofol include Hospira and APP. As of Sept. 29, Hospira said it was beginning to release a limited number of batches and APP reported an increase in production.
