Medicare Compliance & Reimbursement

CMS MANUAL UPDATE

Physicians will be able to bill Medicare for HCPCS code J0880 starting Jan. 1, 2003, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says in a Dec. 24 program transmittal (change request 3037). The code - which is for a 5 mcg injection of darbepoetin alfa - will only be billable, however, when the product is administered in a physician's office to non-end stage renal disease patients who are not on dialysis. In other recent transmittals, CMS: implements the 1.5-percent physician fee schedule update for 2004 (CR 3028); outlines plans to crack down on fraud relating to power wheelchairs (CR 2986);
revises certain transaction companion documents (CR 2900; CR 2964); and updates durable medical equipment fee schedule amounts for 2004. To see the transmittals, go to http://cms.hhs.gov/manuals/pm_trans/2003/transmittals/comm_date_dsc.asp.
