An atrioventricular (AV) canal defect is repaired by closing the hole in the cardiac septa that causes mixing of blood inside the heart chambers. Valve competence also needs to be restored. Based on the severity of the defect, sometimes the valve is replaced with a mechanical or tissue valve.
