Avascular family an be compared to a tree with branches. Vascular families are the same; a main vessel is present, and other vessels branch off from the main vessel. Vessels that are connected in this manner are considered families.

Think of it like a tree.

The trunk is your first order.

A branch off the trunk is your second order.

A branch stemming off that branch is your third order.

Ex:

Common iliac - 36245

Common Femoral - 36246

SFA (Superficial femoral artery) - 36247

These would be your code selections from a contralateral approach(meaning they started on the left and went to the right or vice versa).
