My physician has recently been approached about a scenario helping 2 new physicians in our area. They will not be granted full billing privileges for pacemakers and defibs until they perform 25 of these. If my physician oversees the procedures and provides guidance and training are there any services he would be able to bill for or does he have to actually be hands on with the procedure? Would it be appropriate for us to bill as an assistant surgeon?
Thanks!

Does the procedure code allow an assistant surgeon.
you can find this information on the Mediace website under the medicare fee schedule.

there is a section that shows assistant surgeon and it will have a 0,1, or 9. which will tell you if its allowed.

if it's not then the rendering physician would have to bill on his own.
