A friend is a patient at one of these clinics. She never sees the doctor, always sees a medical assistant (not really sure if she is even a med assistant). They always ask if she has questions or if she would like to see the doctor but she doesn't. They charge her $90.00 each time and mark the code 99212 on the check out sheet. All they do is check her weight and BP. Is this code billable? Thank you!

Is this a hospital outpatient based. If so then that is the facility charge which is based not on a physician visit but on their utilization of resources so it is possible it is a facility level 99212. Each facility is required to make up their own criteria fro what constitutes a given level. If this is a physician clinic then no this cannot be charged.

I know that it is not outpt hospital...It's a free standing clinic. We will find out exactly what the title is for the person checking the weight and BP. Thank you for your quick response. We really appreciate it!

99211

99212 is only billable if the patient sees the provider. 99211 is the nurse visit code. However if this service is not billable to insurance and she is considered self pay, the clinic may have set up self pay prices for these services with dummy codes.
