If you have a patient that has 2 known masses of the same breast, would you code each of them separately. for instance; patient has a mass at 11:00, showing ductal carcinoma, and also has a mass at 5:00 which show ductal carcinoma. Would you consider this overlapping as it states in the ICD9 book under 1748?

the tip states only for bilateral breast to code separatley for 2 different sites. This patient has 2 sites of same breast..

Thanks Kristen:confused:

2 sites same breast

I would use the 174.8 as this is for two overlapping sites, or two sites of "unknown" origin...meaning... you don't know which one came first. The 174.9 would be if the physician simply didn't specify where in the breast the mass or masses were located....hope that helps!
