Can a pediatrician bill for a nasal swap to test for pertussis? What code do I use?

I have reviewed quite a few articles on the web and there are varied opinions as to what code to use: 87798, 87801, 87265? I need to know what code to use for the pediatrician to record?

What exactly is the pediatrician doing? The codes you listed are the lab codes. If all the pediatrician is doing is taking a swab, then it would be included in your E/M code.

Clarification please

Do you need a code for the lab? Or are you looking for a procedure code for obtaining the swab?

Obtaining the swab is part of the E/M service - no separate code.
