I am looking for feedback regarding coding acute osteomyelitis M86.--- with M84.8-- other disorders of continuity of bone to fully describe the patient's condition.

Can these two codes be used together? I could not find any "excludes" note with M84.8--. M86 does have excludes notes but not for M84.8. What should I look for in documentation to support the code M84.8--?

M86.--- Osteomyelitis indicates to use additional codes for infectious agent and M89.7-- to identify major osseous defects if applicable.

Does anyone know of any reasons not to code these two codes together? M86.--- and M84.8--

Thank you for your feedback.

Hi Debra,

Thank you for your question. The documentation supports the diagnosis of osteomyelitis with additional diagnosis for the source of the infection (wounds, prosthetic joints) along with the infectious organism and any complications such as septic arthritis, osteonecrosis.

Then code what you have documented. The osteomyelitis and the organism. You have no documentation for the M84.8 code.
