How do we code symptomatic individuals who are being tested for covid with no actual known exposure? Are we just coding the symptoms only or do we add Z20.822 as well because we are still in a pandemic and it is assumed we have all been exposed? Really need help with this, thanks!

Hi Elizabeth,
Z20.822 Contact with and (suspected) exposure to COVID-19

  • For asymptomatic individuals with actual or suspected exposure to COVID-19, assign code Z20.822.
  • For symptomatic individuals with actual or suspected exposure to COVID-19 and the infection has been ruled out, or test results are inconclusive or unknown, assign code Z20.822.
  • If a patient with signs/symptoms associated with COVID-19 also has an actual or suspected contact with or exposure to COVID-19, assign Z20.822 as an additional code.
Hope that helps.

Michele

We are still in the pandemic - the declaration of the public health emergency was renewed again on 4/15/21 and it remains in effect for 90 days unless renewed again. I'm not aware of any change in the coding guidance, so the Z20.822 is still appropriate, as is cited in the post above.
