I have a situation where a patient with a stab wound to the RT chest wall (with hemopneumothorax) is taken to the OR, and the CRNA assumes care (START time 0227). The planned procedure was a thoracotomy, but within 5 minutes the patient coded and expired a short time later (END time 0252). General anesthesia was never initiated and the surgeon never made an incision. I would appreciate any help in finding the appropriate CPT code (E/M?). I hope I've provided enough information. Thank you.

You can bill the appropriate E/M level for this as anesthesia was not administered. We usually used the low E/M CPT code unless the CRNA/Anesthesiologist performed any part of the procedure. Did the CRNA help perform the CPR???
