Hi...I'm new to this and have a question that I'm hoping someone can answer....I am a CPC-A and have been told that one cannot try for a specialty credential for two years after one takes the first test...is this true? I noticed in the Coding Edge magazine listed under apprentices, some have both the credentials of CPC-A and CPC-H (for example). I'm just wondering if you have to wait that long or wait until the A drops...any help would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

AAPC has developed specialty credentials to enable coders to demonstrate superior levels of expertise in their respective specialty disciplines.

Specialty credentials are stand-alone certifications with no requirement to hold a CPC®, CPC-H® or CPC-P® credential
Exams aptly measure preparedness for “real world” coding by being operative/patient-note based

I copied this from the corporate site. They changed the requirements for 2009, it sounds like the info you are getting is related to previous years.

Good luck,
