Does anyone have specific guidelines on the Critical Care documentation? I have a pulmonist who does critical care in the ICU with multiple pt's. How is it documented when he also consults with other MD's and the patients family? That needs to be included in the total time billed for Critical care correct? would appreciate any info about those guidelines. Thanks.

Keep in mind that just because the patient is in the ICU does not qualify for a Critical Care code alone. There must be supporting documentation of a life threatening condition as well as documentation of what measures and treatment the provider is actively taking to prolong the patient's life. The attachment is a good resource and the CPT book is as well. They are time based codes. There must be a minimum of 30 minutes documented to support Critical Care code 99291.There is a table of time on page 24 of the CPT book.
