Our providers use the L89.9 for skin lesions quite frequently. My question is if the patient states new skin lesion that they have notice is growing...should the provider use D49.2 instead of the L98.9. Only asking for when they use the 17110 CPT code? Any input is welcomed.

Thank you,
Nichole

D49.2 is not the correct code for a 'skin lesion'. D49.2 is for a neoplasm and should not be used unless there is a pathology report to support it. It is not possible to make a diagnosis of a neoplasm without an examination of the cells under a microscope.

Thank you! I knew the D48.5 Uncertain behavior had to come from a path report. But I wasn't getting a clear understanding if the D49.2 followed the same rule. Thank you so much for getting back to me.
