I have been coding Emergency Medicine for 35 years. I have never coded a chart where the E/R Physician decides to perform an Appendectomy. The E/R Phys usually makes arrangements to have patient admitted and a Surgeon performs the appendectomy.

Here is the Question for the December Quiz " A patient visits the emergency department with acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain that increases with cough and motion. The provider determines the patient has acute appendicitis and decides to immediately perform an appendectomy. Which modifier is added to the E/M code for this encounter? IF this ever happened the correct modifier would be 57 .

I'm curious if any other E/R Coders have ever seen this in your E/R?

Per the article, modifier 57 is used by both the E/R physician and the surgeon who is consulted. I'm a surgical coder so I'm on the other side of it!
