Is there a set amount of time that CMS considers 'unreasonable', for providers to take to complete their dictation after a visit? I remember seeing that they recommend that it's done as quickly as possible to ensure accuracy, but do they specify a deadline, or is what's considered "reasonable" open to interpretation?

I'm looking for something along the lines of "Providers must complete dictation within one week of the encounter" (or whatever amount of time, as long as it's defined), and preferably a guideline, and not a suggestion...can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks! :)

I haven't found anything concrete from CMS but my carrier has some guidance.

Documentation Pointers

-Medicare expects the documentation to be generated during the time of service or shortly thereafter.

-Delayed entries within a reasonable time frame (24-48 hrs.) are acceptable for purposes of clarification, error correction, the addition of information not initially available, and if certain unusual circumstances prevented the generation of the note at the time of service.

I saw that, but I was hoping there was something more definitive that exists...thanks, though! Glad to know I wasn't the only one who had trouble find info on it!
