Hi all,
One of our physicians told us that he was under the impression that an ER visit did not require the "request" for a consultation (our physicians are Specialists) because they were asked to see the patient by the ER physician.
Until this point, we had been telling our physicians to document the request by the ER dr. for our doc to see the patient, if the patient was to be seen in the ER.
What are your thoughts on this? I'd appreciate any input anyone can give me...

Technically the ER physician does not REQUEST a consultation. Therefore you do not code a consultation you code an ER visit level. There is no way to meet the three Rs of a consult with an ER REFERRAL. The Er physician is not requesting from your physician a decision or an opinion for them to use to make future decisions for this patient and they do not have a chart that your letter of report of findings can be appended to. This is an ER referral of care and it should be coded with Er visit levels. It should be documented by the physician that the ER physician referred the patient to them but I do not know that this is a requirement.
